Excuse the self-reference, but you may be interested in these musings on comparisons of Joni with Colette (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize just before she died; I hope today's Nobel committee doesn't leave it too late with JM).

So wonderful. Last night I was at two in person events for Leonard Cohen at Temple Emanuel THe first one was at the auditorium at the Striecker center featured his cantor from Montreal and choir singing Leonard with pre recorded Leonard some want it darker and Abigail Progrebin interviewing Matti Friedman about his new book about Leonard going to Israel during the Yom Kippur war. THe main event in their giant sanctuary was a tribute concert by Judy Collins with band and while at first telling some anecdotes She opened with Suzanne and closed almost two hours later with Bird on a wire. The program was mostly Leonard but she did two Joni songs, Both sides Now, and Chelsea Morning which she dedicated to the Clintons and told us about how she met Joni and introduced her to Leonard. It was a wonderful evening. Joni is everywhere

I grew up listening to Joni Mitchell and fell in love with her voice and her stories of a woman always alone, separate from the men who tried and failed to love her enough or in the right way. “A Case of You” is probably my current favorite: “you said, ‘ I am constant as the northern star’/Constant in the dark? Where’s that at? If you want me I’ll be at the bar”. The dissonance between the male lover’s romantic fidelity and what she actually needs is so perfectly captured here. Ah Joni…I have drunk more than one case of you, and you never leave me on my feet.
