I read Cohen's novel, BEAUTIFUL LOSERS, in 1969 or 1970 and really didn't like it at the time. I recall that I thought the predominance of sex scenes and references were gratuitous and served as too much filler. I loved his songs, however, which started to come after the novel. I might have to go back and revisit the book, but perhaps it's better left alone.

Yes, he is at his best in the songs and the poems.
